Our story
Founded in 2016 by our Chief Executive, Tom Gaskin, Shoebox Enterprises CIC began its journey as Pop Up Enterprises. Since then, it has grown into a leading social enterprise, working alongside local people and partners to strengthen communities and create a lasting impact.
Rooted in Tom’s background in community development, our mission is simple: to empower people to connect with their communities and lead fulfilling lives. We achieve this by providing inclusive, welcoming spaces, volunteer-led community activities, and peer support groups. In addition, we run a range of funded community projects and social initiatives such as Community Connectors and Baking for Wellbeing.
Currently we operate Community Hubs in Norwich and Great Yarmouth.
A place with history: Ponds Foot Fitters
Our Norwich Headquarters and Shoebox Community Hub on Castle Meadow was once formerly home to Ponds – one of Norwich’s oldest Foot Fitters. This cherished space, which began its journey as a factory in 1861, became a cornerstone of the Norwich community, renowned for its exceptional service and dedication to its customers that carried them all the way to 2013. Today, we carry forward this person-centred ethos and spirit in all that we do.
Uncovering hidden history: tours & experiences
Did you know that beneath our Norwich Headquarters and Community Hub lies the remains of a medieval street? We’re proud to share this remarkable hidden space through our famous Hidden Street Tours, offering a unique glimpse into Norwich’s rich past.
First launched in 2017 for Heritage Open Days, these tours quickly became the foundation of our social enterprise model, allowing us to expand into a growing range of historical tours and experiences across the city – with even more exciting locations on the horizon!
Every ticket purchased directly supports our community work, helping to sustain our groups, hubs, and social initiatives.
Why the Shoebox?
The Shoebox name is not just a nod to our Headquarters’ past but also reflects what we’re all about now — creating spaces where memories and friendships are made and cherished, just like the keepsakes in a shoebox.
